Tuesday Jobs

We made and paper mached a gold dome as a stand for CeRES. Tomorrow we will cover it with the sunflowers we made last week.
Some of our Vegetables look good enough to eat.... but we don't reccommend a taste test!
Paper, cellulose paste and tin foil are NOT health food
These students are designing where we should place each group of vegetables on the finished sculpture so we can tell the arms from the toga
We also added the finishing touches like stems on the pumpkins so they will have time to dry overnight. Tomorrow Ceres will go to the Fair!

CeRES made her first trip outside the art room to
the Welcoming Assembly
Mrs.Stewart welcomed our new students and this years Farm Friends to our school community
These are some of our local Farm Friends who will partner with classes and allow students to experience life on a working farm and learn how our food is produced.
Abby is our Local Farm to School coordinator and has made our connections with Farmers easier. Thanks Abby !
Behind Abby you can see our Famous Farmers - a recreation of Grant Wood's American Gothic painting . We made it out of seeds for Tunbridge Fair last year.

Monday
We made Apples Tomatoes, Rasberries
Red Cabbage Cherries, Grapes and Celery.

Then we gave CERES a face out of a
Chili Pepper for a mouth
Eggplant for a nose
Spinach for ears ( with Cherry earrings)
Indian Corn for a crown
and
Cherries and Blueberries for eyes
That is just a beginning
but

She is ready to be introduced at our welcoming assembly tomorrow.

Notice we have a new way of spelling CeRES
to highlight our school initials that are part of her name.

Friday Fun
We continued to make paper mache vegetables like corn
and eggplants
and pumpkins.
One of the students suggested today that Ceres carry a cornucopia and we started it before the end of the day.... our project is a work in progress and open to ideas and suggestions from all of our students

Even late on a Friday afternoon these second graders concentrated and worked cooperatively!

STEP THREE

Cooperate with others. This group of 3/4 Graders worked together and helped one another when they made their sunflowers. The sunflowers may cover the dome that the statue of CERES stands on but we will see how things develop and if a better idea is suggested!
A detail of a finished Sunflower

Today ....We also made Pears, Potatoes and Summer Squash.

DAY TWO

We painted the blue board cut out of Ceres -GREEN-
It is the Green Mountain State after all!!

We created paper-mache fruits and vegetables
using an armature of tinfoil
and coating it with colored
construction paper.

We made Onions -Apples- Hot Chili Peppers and Carrots today
in gradesK -6.
Some people love the feel of paper-mache paste
and some " not so much"
but every student tried their best.

At the end of the day we were proud
of the sculptures we made
and could see the beginning
of our Tunbridge Fair project for 2010.
Our "Ceres " was inspired by the artist
Arcimboldo who painted portraits that
were really collections of fruits and vegetables.

We researched information about the Vermont Statehouse
This is what we found

THE VERMONT STATE HOUSE and the Ceres Sculpture

The current structure was designed by architect Thomas Silloway and opened in 1859. The design was similar to the second structure designed by Ammi B. Young who later designed buildings in Washington DC. The first state house Building was made in 1808

At first the dome was painted a dark terracotta red. Gold leaf was added in 1907. Ceres, the statue on top of the structure, was the roman goddess of agriculture. The original statue was carved by Vermont artist Larkin Mead in a realistic style. Then it was re-done in 1938 by Dwight Dwinell who was 87 years old and a sergeant at arms but carved in a folk art style. When they went to restore the Ceres sculpture they found she had a time capsule in her head.

The Doric portico, the main ceremonial entrance with the columns, has a granite statue of Ethan Allen that was also made by Larkin Mead who made the first Ceres Sculpture.

All of the art students at Randolph Elementary will contribute to the creation of CERES

How do we do this in a week ? Follow our blog and see our progress.

Step One

Start with Blue-board and enthusiastic fifth and sixth graders

Use an overhead projector to project the image of Ceres from the Statehouse sculpture onto the surface

Trace around the contours of the projected sculpture so we have guidelines for cutting out her shape.
